A former pumphouse could soon be transformed into a mixture of about 30 tourist lodges and holiday lets in Carmarthenshire.

Plans have been put forward by Pembrey Leisure Ltd to convert and extend the former historic pumphouse near Pembrey Country Park.

If successful, the former pumphouse itself would be converted into 16 self-contained holiday lets, 11 of which would be one-bedroom units based on the ground floor, with the further five two-storey two-bedroom units on the first and second floors.

The former pumphouse was built around 1937-1939 and was working up until 2000. Its purpose was to store and pump clean water to Swiss Valley reservoir when the demand for water in Llanelli required it to do so.

Many of the traditional features would remain in place, including the existing slate roof and the existing half-round window with a stone curved header. While the first floor would include two communal terraced areas to the east and west of the property.

The application also details plans to introduce 13 self-contained tourist lodges to the west of the former pumphouse building, made up of three-bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a large common room.

The development would be accessed from Factory Road, in Pembrey, and there would be 24 car parking spaces for those staying within the pumphouse, while the lodges would come with individual parking spaces.

A new path for pedestrians and cyclists would also be created from the site.

A planning statement by agents Asbri Planning Ltd reads: “The historic building itself is currently vacant and in need of renovating to ensure its future longevity. It comprises a mix of historic and contemporary elements including its original structure of red brick with large arched windows.

“The site sits in an accessible location, near the entrance of the Pembrey Country Park. From the site, visitors can access the entire park via active travel methods and vehicular transport. A cycle path is situated immediately adjacent to the site’s entrance, which provides a route directly into the park and further to the beach.

“Whilst there is currently provision for touring caravans, tents and motorhomes within the Pembrey Country Park area, there is currently an obvious absence of a self-contained tourist accommodation. The proposed development will therefore diversify and provide a higher quality ‘niche’ offer.”
