Three people were arrested in Philippi, Cape Town, on Sunday after they were found with guns.
According to police in the Western Cape, one was found with a fake firearm.
Another individual was arrested on Monday for failing to produce a gun licence.
Western Cape police on Sunday night arrested three people for being in possession of prohibited guns.
The arrests came after one of the men fired shots at a Philippi East officer on patrol in Thekwane Street in Lower Crossroads, police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said.
Van Wyk said a 26-year-old fired shots from a moving vehicle. Police gave chase and the getaway vehicle stopped after it crashed.
“The suspect was found in possession of a firearm without a serial number and six rounds,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Nyanga, two men – aged 26 and 28 – were arrested in Zwelitsha for being in possession of a fake gun and four rounds of ammunition.
Information from Crime Intelligence led police to the house and a search was conducted, Van Wyk said.
He said the three men were expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court and would be charged for the possession of a prohibited firearm, imitation firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
Van Wyk said the Maitland Flying Squad responded to a shooting complaint in Manenberg on Sunday night.
He said one person fled the scene when they saw police approaching.
“The members searched the area where the suspects stood and found a 9mm pistol. No arrests were made. The firearm was handed in as an exhibit at Manenberg SAPS,” Van Wyk said.
In an unrelated matter in Delft on Monday, police arrested a 40-year old after he failed to provide a valid licence for the firearm in his possession.
Van Wyk said Delft police members had been conducting a Vehicle Check Point at around 12:15 on the corners of Delft Main Road and Symphony Way.
They searched the individual’s white Toyota Avanza and found a 38 Taurus revolver as well as five rounds of ammunition.
“The 40-year-old occupant was arrested and detained when he could not provide a valid licence to be in possession of the mentioned firearm. Once charged, the suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition,” Van Wyk said.
