Novak Djokovic announces he’ll compete at Tokyo Olympics coming off Wimbledon win

Novak Djokovic wants to keep his dominant streak going. Just days after Djokovic took home the win at Wimbledon, Djokovic announced he would take part in the Tokyo Olympics.

Djokovic made the announcement in a video posted on social media. In the video, he surprises his “little friend Koujirou” for the kid’s sixth birthday. At the end of Djokovic’s message, he tells Koujirou “Hopefully, I can see you in Tokyo at the Olympic games.”

Djokovic has represented Serbia in the Olympics multiple times. He won a bronze medal at the games in 2008. He also competed in the Olympics in 2012 and 2016, though did not medal those years.

Other tennis stars have bowed out of Toyko Olympics

Given Djokovic’s willingness to participate in the games, his presence at the event shouldn’t come as a major surprise. His commitment, however, may carry more weight this year, as a number of tennis’ biggest names have declined to participate in the Tokyo Olympics for various reasons. 

Roger Federer is among the biggest names to drop out of the event. Federer pulled out of the Olympics to rest his surgically-repaired knee. Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Serena Williams will also skip the Olympics. Williams said she had multiple reasons for not taking part, but didn’t want to discuss them. Other players will miss the event so they can train for the U.S. Open, which will take place in August.
