Man United close in on double deal for La Liga defenders

Manchester United are emerging as early frontrunners for the most successful transfer window this summer, with the Red Devils having all but secured the services of Jadon Sancho.

In addition to the Borussia Dortmund star, United are also apparently on the verge of signing Real Madrid’s World Cup winning defender Raphael Varane.

According to The Sun, the deal for the centre-back is all but complete, with a £50 million fee agreed between the two clubs, despite the player having just 12 months remaining on his current contract.

Varane will provide a solution to a long-term issue for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been hunting for a defender to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of United’s defence.

Neither Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are believed to be the solution to the problem, hence United splashing such a large sum of money on Varane.

Surprisingly, it appears that Varane may not be the only new name arriving at Old Trafford from Spain.

The same report also suggests that a deal for England full-back Kieran Trippier is equally as close.

The former Tottenham defender has spent two seasons in the Spanish capital with Atletico Madrid, but is claimed to have told the club of his desire to return to his homeland.

A deal for the 30-year-old, who will provide much needed competition for places as well as experience in Solskjaer’s side, will reportedly cost around £18 million.

Trippier has been an integral part of the England setup since Gareth Southgate took over.

Trippier will provide some much needed respite for young right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka who, in the absence of another senior in his position, played a remarkable 54 games for United last term.

It is also suggested that Madrid were initially holding out for £60 million for Varane however, having lost Sergio Ramos on a free and knowing how close the French World Cup winner is to being available for nothing, it’s thought they have decided to accept United’s slightly lower offer.

It is believed that the defender, still regarded by many as one of the world’s best in his position, will sign a five-year deal with his new employers.
