Jorginho reveals how he could beat Ronaldo & Messi to Ballon d’Or
Chelsea star Jorginho has named one key factor that could give him the edge over Messi, Neymar, and even Ronaldo for the Ballon d’Or.
Jorginho believes he could win the 2021 Ballon d’Or if votes are based on trophies won for this year.
The 29-year-old accepts his only hope of beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the two dominant forces in football, rests on the criteria that voters base their verdicts on in December.
Jorginho knows talent alone won’t give him the nod over the two superstars, but he reckons he has had the better season overall.
“We all have dreams,” said the midfielder on Chelsea’s official website. “But, I’ll be honest, it depends on the criteria that the decision is based on.
“If we’re talking about talent, then I know I’m not the best in the world. But if it’s going on titles, then nobody has won more than I have this season!
“How could I compare myself to Messi, Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo? They’ve got completely different characteristics to me. But, I repeat, it depends on the criteria.”
What makes Jorginho a Ballon d’Or candidate?
The former Napoli man played a key part in Chelsea’s Champions League success last season. Had it not been for an FA Cup final defeat to Leicester City, he would’ve won a double. Nonetheless, Jorginho raised his Ballon d’Or prospects again by helping Italy win Euro 2020 in an impressive fashion.
“If he wins the European Championship, he is a candidate for the Ballon d’Or,” former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri told
SportItalia about Jorginho before the Euro 2020 final.
“He’s a refined player, and that’s why everyone doesn’t understand him.
“He makes everything seem easy, it’s his greatness. When I went to Chelsea, we managed to snatch him from Manchester City.
“At first it was hard to understand him, the fans, the journalist, now I see that he is appreciated. He was also a captain of Chelsea.”
The only player to beat Messi and Ronaldo to the Ballon d’Or in the last 12 years is Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric in 2018.
