Insecticide Causes Soil Contamination Concerns Decades Later at a High School in California

LA Testing provides environmental and industrial hygiene testing services to combat exposure risks to chemical and biological hazards.

Huntington Beach, California – WEBWIRE – Friday, July 23, 2021

Earlier this year, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) collected public input about plans to remove contaminated soil from a high school in Southern California. Back in 2013, over 500 tons of soil were removed from part of the campus due to the presence of chlordane, but more contaminated soil was later discovered.

Nationwide, all uses of chlordane – a broad-spectrum insecticide, have been banned in the United States since 1988. Before then, it was used to control termites. Prior to 1978, it was also used to control field crop pests. Even though chlordane has not been used in decades, it is a very stable chemical that can persist for long periods of time in soil.

The current federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for chlordane is 2 ppb and the California MCL is 0.1 ppb. In California, chlordane was listed by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) as far back as 1988, as known to cause cancer.

“The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) reports that people can be exposed to chlordane through skin contact, by inhaling it, and from eating or drinking contaminated food or water,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “Chlordane is one of many pesticides that the scientists at LA Testing are able to detect from environmental samples. Our California laboratories, along with our network of testing facilities located across North America, provide soil, air, water, bulk material, and industrial hygiene testing for a wide range of chemical and biological exposure risks. These services are regularly called upon to identify soil contamination issues and to confirm remediation efforts are successful.”
