Insecticide Causes Soil Contamination Concerns Decades Later at a High School in California

Earlier this year, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) collected public input about plans to remove contaminated soil from a high school in Southern California. Back in 2013, over 500 tons of soil were removed from part of the campus due to the presence of chlordane, but more contaminated soil was later discovered.

Nationwide, all uses of chlordane – a broad-spectrum insecticide, have been banned in the United States since 1988. Before then, it was used to control termites. Prior to 1978, it was also used to control field crop pests. Even though chlordane has not been used in decades, it is a very stable chemical that can persist for long periods of time in soil.

The current federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for chlordane is 2 ppb and the California MCL is 0.1 ppb. In California, chlordane was listed by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) as far back as 1988, as known to cause cancer.
