Everything We Know About Season Two of Netflix’s The Witcher

 1. Netflix’s The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill, has been renewed for a second season.

 2. The season will introduce three more Witchers, and also star Kristofer Hivju of Game of Thrones fame.

 3. Here’s everything else we know about the upcoming season.

Just ahead of its first season launch—which by now you’ve probably binged, gotten confused about timelines, forever implanted the catchiest song in the history of TV music in your head, and has forced you to look at yourself naked in the mirror and realize that you are in fact not Henry Cavill—Netflix’s The Witcher was picked up for a second season. So toss a coin to that special person in your life who actually pays for Netflix. Monster killing awaits.

The series, based on the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, was rumored to cost about $10 million per episode, putting it about even with Game of Thrones‘ final season—a similar show the series has been trying to emulate.

While The Witcher’s first season certainly wasn’t a smooth, methodical entry into the series like Game of Thrones’ first (and arguably best) season proved to be, it did manage to show promise for bigger and more exciting battles to come. Here’s hoping The Witcher sticks to its serio-comic tone—bard songs, side quests, and audience-winks—and doesn’t go full no-fun Jon Snow for season 2.

Here’s what we know so far.

When is The Witcher’s Season 2 release date?

On July 9th, Netflix and game developer CD Projekt Red co-hosted WitcherCon, a day to celebrate everything about The Witcher. And of course, to tease new content. Netflix released multiple YouTube videos and announced season 2’s official release date.

Back in 2020, Cavill posted photos from the upcoming season on his Instagram, alongside a quote from one of the novels: “‘It may turn out,’ said the white-haired man a moment later, ‘that their comrades or cronies may ask what befell these evil men. Tell them the Wolf bit them. The White Wolf. And add that they should keep glancing over their shoulders. One day they’ll look back and see the Wolf.’”

So when do we get to see this White Wolf of which Cavill writes?

Netflix announced the second season of The Witcher is coming December 17, 2021. The winter release date is still a ways away, but at least we have a date right?

Filming on season 2 had paused in March 2020 along with everything that is good and fun in this world. In August of that year, Cavill and company resumed filming. Like season 1, there are eight episodes planned, with Cavill and some new faces joining the fun.

Who’s in the cast?

In season 1, Geralt inferred that he was one of the last of his kind. He even found the body of another witcher, suggesting that they are in fact mortal. All that said, season 2 will give us three (!) more witchers: Coen (played by Yasen Atour), Lambert (played by Paul Bullion of Peaky Blinders), and Eskel (played by Thue Ersten Rasmussen of Fast and Furious 9).

Also joining the cast are Agnes Bjorn and Aisha Fabienne Ross.

The latest to join the cast is a name you might not recognize—Kristofer Hivju—but a face you certainly will. He played Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones, and will be a big part of the second Witcher season.

What will Season 2 be about?

The first season covered only the first novel of The Witcher series, so we can assume the second will follow the next book. Netflix just posted a video with episode titles for the upcoming season. Fans of the video game and book series can scan the titles for any hints for what’s to come.

In June 2021, Netflix also posted a brief teaser. So brief you’ll almost miss half the shots.

Most likely the next season will pick up right where season 1 left off, when Ciri manages to make contact with Geralt.

How many more seasons of The Witcher can we expect?

While there’s no word yet on season 3, signs are promising. The entire story of The Witcher is composed of six full-length books and two short story collections. And Netflix greenlit an animated spin-off movie. Yeah, they’re all in on this one.
